What is an Addiction?
Addiction is a chronic and progressive disease. The cycle of addiction usually begins with experimental or social use. Abuse occurs when social use results in multiple consequences. Dependence occurs when there is a physical or emotional need for a substance or behavior in order to “feel normal.”
Some commonly known substances and behaviors that people become addicted to include:
- Alcohol
- Tobacco
- Marijuana
- Cocaine
- Hallucinogens
- Gambling
- Food
- Smoking
Some substances and behaviors are not so obvious because it is more readily available and acceptable. These can include:
- Pain Pills
- Prescription Medication
- Over-The-Counter Medication
- Internet
SCLHSA offers the following Outpatient Addiction Services:
- Behavioral Health Assessments–Determines the level of care and individualized treatment needs.
- Individual Therapy— Utilizes evidence-based techniques focused on the client’s identified in the individualized treatment plan.
- Marriage and Family Therapy— Utilizes evidence-based techniques focused on teaching skills for healthier marriage and family relationships
- Group Therapy— Utilizes evidence-based practices focused on building and practicing recovery support skills for the special populations including:
- Addictive Disorders
- Mental Health
- Co-Occurring
- Gender Specific
- Adolescent
- LGBTQ
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)— Aimed at providing education, recovery skills and individual family support. IOP creates a seamless continuum of care for individuals needing more structure than traditional weekly outpatient treatment or as a step-down to inpatient or residential treatment.
- Crisis Intervention— Risk assessment, triage and the appropriate interventions for acute psychiatric and/or substance abuse needs in an effort to maintain the client in the least restrictive environment.
- Certified Peer Support Specialist Services— Provides skill building sessions, Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) group, referral assistance and other support services to clients in each of the Behavioral Health centers.
- 3rd and 4th Offense DWI Program— Provides treatment for 3rd and 4th offense DWI convicted felons in accordance to the current Louisiana Law, R.S. 14:98.
- Psychological Testing— Utilizes standardized testing to assist the treatment with differential diagnosis, and in determining levels of psychological functioning including cognitive ability, intellectual functioning, achievement, learning disorders, psychological disorders, personality dynamics, and attention problems
- Tobacco Cessation— Provides gum, patches and/or medication in addition to education and/or therapy to help clients quit tobacco products.
- FREE Gambling Services— Provides the following outpatient gambling services at each Behavioral Health Center
- Gambling Risk Screening– Identifies risk factors and to determine the need for further assessment.
- Assessments– Determines the level of care and individualized treatment needs.
- Individualized Therapy Sessions
- Group Therapy Sessions
- Referrals to Community Support Group Meetings–Provides additional support in the community setting.
- Referrals to Inpatient Gambling Treatment Facilities– Provides structured treatment setting in a residential setting for individualized unable to remain gambling free.
- Substance Abuse Professional Services— Certified SAP provides assessment and completion interviews for individuals in violation of the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulation 49 CFR Part 40.
